Overview
Career Services & Resources
Individual appointments can be scheduled to review resumes and cover letters, conduct practice interviews, or discuss job-search strategies. Please call 505-646-1631 to schedule an appointment. During the fall and spring semesters, Career Services sponsors and/or supports various fairs on the campus and elsewhere. Employers come together in one location to meet prospective candidates for part-time jobs, internships, co-ops, and professional employment. These activities present excellent opportunities for interaction, information gathering, networking, and distributing/collecting resumes. The Career Services home page features and provides links to information about several job and career fairs.

Professional Employment Services As students approach graduation (usually within two semesters), we encourage establishing a file where information may be obtained by prospective employers. The file, which contains a resume, transcripts, and references, is required for participation in professional on-campus interviewing. It is also used for referral purposes, when employers contact our office seeking candidates. Registrants who contact employers on their own may have credentials sent upon request. As an added bonus, those who establish Professional Employment Files with Career Services are entitled to the use of MonsterTRAK, a comprehensive internet resource for job seekers. Career Services adheres to the following ethical guidelines set forth by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the professional association for career planning, placement, and recruitment. These principles have been officially adopted by the university administration. Principles for Professional Conduct for College Career Planning, Placement and Recruitment* The following principles are intended to provide a framework for the professional relationships among the candidates, colleges and universities, and employing organizations involved in the recruitment of college graduates.
CANDIDATES Candidates should honor the policies and procedures of their institutions and should adequately prepare for the interviewing process and accurately present their qualifications and interests. Candidates should sign up for interviews only when seriously considering the position for which the organization is interviewing and should notify the career services office if they must cancel an interview appointment; the candidate should also notify the employer if they must cancel a plant/office trip. Candidates are responsible for notifying organizations of their acceptance or rejection of offers by the earliest possible time and no later than the time mutually agreed upon. Reimbursement for visits at an organization's expense should be only for those reasonable expenditures pertinent to the trip. If other organizations are visited on the same trip, the candidate should inform the organizations and prorate the costs. An accepted offer is a contractual agreement that is expected to be honored. After accepting an offer, candidates should withdraw from the interviewing process and notify the career planning and placement office and other organizations with offers pending.
COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES Career planning and placement practitioners are responsible for establishing and monitoring practices which ensure the fair and accurate representation of students and the institution in the recruitment process. Career planning and placement practitioners should promote and follow nondiscriminatory practices. The professional services of a career planning and placement office, including all counseling and information aspects, facilities, and support services, should be available to students and organizations without charge when utilized for recruiting purposes. The candidate's freedom of choice in the selection of a career or a position should be protected from undue influence by faculty, placement staff, and recruiters. Career planning and placement practitioners should inform students of obligations, both financial and otherwise, when utilizing the services of agencies or other organizations performing recruiting services for a fee.
RECRUITING ORGANIZATIONS Organizations are responsible for the ethical and legal conduct of their representatives throughout the recruiting process and must assume responsibility for all representations made by authorized representatives. Recruiters should be qualified interviewers and informed representatives of their organizations, and should respect the legal obligations of career planning and placement offices and request only those services and information that legally can be provided. Recruiters should honor the policies and procedures of the individual institutions and should refrain from any practice that adversely affects the interviewing and decision-making processes. Recruiters should make full and accurate presentation of all relevant information during the recruiting process and should advise the career planning and placement office of all recruiting-related activities not conducted through that office. An employment offer that is accepted is a contractual agreement that is expected to be honored. *Reprinted by permission from NACE. Listings of various kinds of positions (i.e., part-time student employment, summer jobs, internships, cooperative education, and professional employment) are made available on our web page, in our main hallway, and in room 224, Garcia Annex. Each fall and spring semester, several hundred employers send recruiters to Career Services. On-campus recruiting is available to all students and alumni. Attendance at an orientation is mandatory for professional recruiting. Please view the Orientation Schedule for dates and times. Company literature, in the form of binders, brochures, cd-roms, video tapes, and homepage addresses, is available to aid in learning more about employers for employment applications and on-campus interviewing. A career resource library provides information on the job search, occupational reference books, and employers' information. Job listings for all majors and all locations can be found in our main office (Room 224, Garcia Annex). Job listings are updated regularly. The staff is very knowledgeable about reference materials that can be found on the internet. Schedule an appointment to discuss how to use the internet to locate information for your career field. Often, employers who are seeking to fill professional positions, but who are not coming for a campus visit, will specify qualifications sought, and we will query our database and send resumes of registrants who meet employers' requirements. |
